You’re Leading Without Vision

The tactical leader is impressive. They can solve any problem in front of them. Make clear decisions quickly. Navigate complex situations with competence. The team respects their skill and trusts their judgment on the immediate.

But without vision… a compelling, clearly communicated picture of where this is all going… tactical leadership produces a team that is competent and directionless simultaneously.

Vision isn’t a mission statement. It’s not a values document or a slide deck with a five-year revenue target.

Vision is the answer to: what is this business becoming, who are we becoming together, and why does it matter beyond the financial result? It’s the narrative that makes the day-to-day effort feel like it’s building toward something worth building.

Teams without vision can be high-performing in the short term. But they erode. The best people… the ones with options… eventually drift toward organizations where there’s something to believe in, not just something to execute.

I spend a lot of time thinking about this in the context of education. The most powerful teachers I’ve encountered aren’t the ones who deliver the best lessons. They’re the ones who make students feel like their growth is part of something larger. The vision does as much as the curriculum.

Your team is no different. They’re capable of extraordinary performance if they understand what they’re contributing to.

What’s the vision you’re actually leading with? Not the one in the deck. The one you communicate, consistently, in the way you talk about the company every day.

Can your team articulate where this business is going and why… without prompting from you?
