Raw damage output is intoxicating. High DPS players feel powerful. They move fast, hit hard, generate impressive numbers. In the right context, they’re essential.
But a party of all DPS and no strategy gets wiped by raid mechanics every time. You can’t burn through a boss that requires coordination. You can’t out-damage a mechanic that requires positioning. You can’t hit your way out of a problem that requires thinking.
A lot of entrepreneurial teams are maxed out on DPS and strategically underdeveloped.
They’re full of high-output people. Executors. Doers. People who can move fast and produce. The energy is high. The motion is constant. But there’s no architecture governing the direction of all that output, no prioritization framework, no mechanism for ensuring that the fast-moving work is pointed at the right objectives.
And fast movement in the wrong direction is how you produce impressive activity with poor outcomes.
Strategy isn’t about slowing down the DPS. It’s about directing it. Ensuring that the team’s collective output is organized around the highest-leverage objectives, not just whatever’s most immediately urgent.
This is the leader’s job at scale. Not more execution. Not more output. The thinking that ensures all the output is pointed correctly.
If you’re still primarily a DPS contributor in your own business… the one who executes most, produces most, stays in the details most… ask yourself who’s doing the strategy work. Who’s looking at the whole board and making sure the party’s positioned correctly?
If the answer is nobody, that’s your highest-leverage move right now.
Are you spending more time executing or directing… and is that the right balance for where your business is?
