I’m working to get so good at building online schools that I don’t have to be the business owner anymore… I can become the client again.
A few years back, I started a marketing agency with a partner. I was good at it… got us to about $50k MRR in just six months. Then I left and sold my shares.
Why?
Because I didn’t like working with clients. They didn’t seem to understand how online marketing actually worked.
They wanted results… and they wanted them yesterday.
They expected everything we did to work perfectly the first time.
They didn’t have the patience needed to succeed and always blamed us when things didn’t go right.
So after a few months of this… I’m ashamed to admit, I quit.
It was just easier to do the work for a client who understood.
Me.
Then this past week, I was chatting with one of my Kendo students. He’s an architect.
He mentioned Mexico’s most famous architect, Luis Barragán. He’s the only Mexican to ever win the Pritzker award (think Nobel Prize for architects).
Barragán was so good, people would beg him for years to design something for them.
And when he rarely said yes, he had two conditions:
- I do what I want.
- I do it when I want.
And folks were fine with that.
Projects took years. They went way over budget. And nobody complained.
You see, he flipped the whole paradigm.
The people who paid him? They were basically the agency. He was the client.
That only happens when you become so good that people is begging to work with you.
And that’s the goal. Be so good, you don’t chase… you choose.
