“Imagine you’re on your deathbed, and standing around your bed are the ghosts of the ideas you never acted on.”
Denzel Washington said that during a commencement speak.
It’s a great mental exercise you might try… picture your final moments, surrounded by the ghosts of all the lives you could’ve lived but never did.
If you’ve been working for ten years or more, you know what it’s like to build skills, solve problems, become the go-to person in your team or organization. You’ve got the scars and the trophies of that time. Yet somewhere you might feel a small voice saying… There’s more to life than this.
Maybe you’ve noticed how much of your day is spent helping someone else’s vision come to life. The meeting agenda, the quarterly goals, the project launch… they’re all important, yes. But what about your vision? What about the teaching, the mentoring, the legacy you might leave behind?
I’ll tell you something…
…teaching what you already know is a powerful next chapter. It doesn’t mean changing your job tomorrow or becoming a full-time guru. It simply means making your experience count for someone else.
Think about the years you’ve spent. The mistakes you made (some of them public, some quiet). The shortcuts you discovered. The way you learned to adapt when things changed.
That’s not just knowledge… it’s permission for someone else to get going faster, avoid dead-ends, feel less alone.
When you teach what you know you actually flip the script… you move from doing to helping others do. And there’s something deeply fulfilling in that. It gives purpose to the long hours, the changes, the failures. It turns accumulation into contribution.
But what holds people back? Often it’s not skill. It’s the story we tell ourselves… “I’m not a teacher.” “I don’t have time.” “Who would listen to me?” In reality, someone already would (and likely many). Someone out there is wondering exactly what you’ve solved.
Here’s the thing… those ghosts I mentioned… they’re real metaphors. The ghosts of could-have-beens.
The potential that walked past you because you didn’t share, because you waited. They’re not out to haunt you. They’re simply reminders… of what might slip away if you don’t act.
So maybe today you ask… What is the knowledge I have that could make another person’s life easier? What habit or insight did I develop that someone else is still chasing? What small teaching could I start (an article, a short video, a 30-minute chat) that plants the seed of something bigger?
You don’t have to do it all. You just have to start. One moment. One lesson. One share of what you’ve already learned.
Because the alternative is quiet. It’s the life where your skills remain your own, your stories untold, the ghosts of the paths you didn’t take hovering silently at your side.
And if that image stirs something inside you… good. Let it. Let it remind you that you’ve got more to give, not just to your job, but to someone who’s a step behind you. And maybe… that’s exactly the next part of your journey you’ve been waiting for.
