People are Scared of What They Don’t Know

People are scared of what they don’t know.

We recently arranged a company retreat to Cancun, Mexico, and I was surprised to see that some of our team were actually, secretly, terrified to go. Not because of the work or the flight, but because of Mexico.

They’d heard the stories. They’d read the headlines. And then, like most of us do, they looked up more things online to confirm what they already believed.

It’s funny how our brains work that way. We don’t look for truth… we look for proof that what we already think is right.

But here’s what’s actually true. Mexico is part of the G20, one of the richest countries in the world. It’s a top destination for Americans, not only for vacations but for retirement. The number of Americans who die in Mexico per capita compared to how many visit makes it statistically safer than most major U.S. cities.

Yet, none of that mattered. The stories in their heads felt more real than the facts.

And that got me thinking… what else in life do we do this with?

How many opportunities do we quietly turn away from because of some story we’ve told ourselves? Stories about why we can’t start something new, or why we’re “not that kind of person.” Stories that keep us safely inside what we know (even when what we know isn’t really making us happy).

I’ve met so many people who’ve worked ten, twenty years in their careers. They’re smart, capable, and respected… but somewhere deep down they feel like something’s missing. They want to do more with what they’ve learned, to make it matter in a bigger way.

But then the stories start up again.
“I don’t know how to start.”
“I’m not a teacher.”
“I’m too old for that.”

Those are just fears dressed up as logic. They’re the same kind of thinking that keeps people from getting on a plane to Cancun.

Here’s the truth… you already know more than you think. You’ve spent years learning, adapting, failing, and figuring things out that others are still struggling to understand. That knowledge could change someone else’s life… if you’d only share it.

You don’t need to be perfect or know everything. You just need to be willing to help someone who’s a few steps behind where you are.

So maybe ask yourself this… what misconception are you holding on to that’s keeping you from moving forward?

Maybe it’s time to stop looking for reasons to stay afraid… and start finding reasons to try.
