When something’s on fire (metaphorically… mostly) I become a productivity warlord.
I don’t check my phone. I don’t “just grab a coffee.” I don’t even blink that much.
I’m locked in like John Wick if John Wick’s dog had been a Google Calendar reminder.
But when things are going smoothly?
Oh no. My brain decides this is the perfect time to buy a unicycle on Facebook Marketplace or research whether otters can be legally kept as pets in Mexico.
Suddenly, the thing that was urgent yesterday is “meh” today, because I’m deep in an article about the fastest elevators in the world.
If you also have this “calm weather = shiny object” brain problem, here’s how I keep myself from accidentally joining a medieval blacksmithing guild instead of getting my work done:
- Fake the fire. I set earlier deadlines with actual stakes. “Done by Wednesday noon, or I buy Mark that disgusting sushi he loves.” I hate sea urchin enough to finish early every time.
- Mini-emergencies. I break big tasks into 25-minute sprints and treat the timer like a bomb. I get that rush of urgency without the actual “we’re all going to die” part.
- Scheduled chaos. I give myself 30 minutes a day to chase whatever shiny thing I want. A new hobby, random YouTube hole, googling “can you outpizza the hut.” I scratch the itch without it eating my whole day.
When things are calm, you either control the chaos or the chaos adopts you like a stray cat and moves into your life forever.
