What if I told you the most important class in your online school is the one where you don’t actually teach anything new?
That’s right. The very first session isn’t about the curriculum, the slides, or the clever framework you’ve been polishing for months.
It’s about one thing: connection.
Because if the student doesn’t connect to you, to the transformation, and to the path, you’ve already lost them no matter how brilliant your knowledge is.
First, connection with the teacher. Students don’t buy information, they buy into you. If Daniel didn’t trust Mr. Miyagi, he never would have picked up that paintbrush or waxed a single car.
Tell your messy origin story, not the polished LinkedIn version. Use your students’ names constantly so they feel seen.
And open with a question they can win, something simple like “What’s one thing you’re hoping this helps you with?” so you come across as a guide, not a drill sergeant.
Second, connection with the transformation. Your students don’t want more information, they want a different version of themselves.
Paint the picture of what life looks like when they succeed, down to the small details. Highlight quick wins with real stories of past students.
And don’t be afraid to anchor the pain by reminding them why they joined in the first place. The transformation matters more when they see what they’re moving away from as much as what they’re moving toward.
Finally, connection with the path. Even if they like you and want the transformation, doubt kills momentum.
Lay out the map so they see exactly how they’ll get from point A to point B. Set expectations for bumps so setbacks feel normal instead of fatal.
And get them to commit to one small step right away so they walk away knowing the path already works because they’re on it.
The opening class is not about stuffing more knowledge into your student’s head. It’s about showing them they can trust you, that the transformation is real, and that the path is one they can actually walk.
Do this, and you’ve earned the right to teach them everything else. Skip it, and the best-designed curriculum in the world won’t save you.
In Productized Education, we don’t sell knowledge. We sell connection, accountability, and clarity. And it all starts with that very first session.
